Message from the Chair: Being a Department Chair is considered one of the most challenges jobs in academia, akin to being caught between a rock and a hard place. I often get asked how have I survived for 15 years as Chair, and the answer is very simple: our faculty. The faculty members of the Systems Engineering and Operations Research (SEOR) department are friendly, collegial, collaborative, keenly interested in students and education, and equally interested in quality research that makes an impact on society. Together, we have advanced the SEOR department to a position of leadership in education and research in systems engineering, operations research, and data analytics.
Alongside her Chair duties, Ariela Sofer is interested in nonlinear programming, optimization in medical applications, and systems thinking. Sofer is currently Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). She has served as Vice President for Sections and Societies of The Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS) and as President of the Association of Chairs of Operations Research Departments (ACORD). She is a member of the editorial board of the SEBoK Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge. She has served as Associate Editor of the Operations Research Journal and Management Science (Journal). She is a member of the editorial Board of MOS-SIAM Book Series on Optimization. Lastly, she is co-author of the textbook "Linear and Nonlinear Optimization," published by SIAM Books in 2008 (and in an earlier edition by McGraw Hill, 1996).
