Certificate in Systems Engineering of Software-Intensive Systems (SIS)

The SIS is designed to teach students the infrastructure of Systems Engineering. Systems Engineering is concerned with the overall process of defining, developing and maintaining quality systems. Whereas other engineering disciplines concentrate on the details of individual aspects of a system (electronics, mechanics, ergonomics, aerodynamics, software, etc.), Systems Engineering involves the integration of all of these aspects into a coherent and effective system. Consequently, systems engineers concentrate their efforts on the engineering process (requirements definition, top-level functional designs, project management, life cycle cost analysis) that serve to organize and coordinate other engineering activities. The SIS responds to the growing need for knowledge in the field of Systems Engineering.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Students may pursue the certificate concurrently with any of the graduate degree programs in the School of information Technology and Engineering; however the SIS is not awarded until all requirements for the certificate have been completed. The Systems Engineering and Operations Research Department has designed a similar track within the Systems Engineering Master's degree.

Certificate Requirements
To obtain the certificate, candidates must complete with an average grade of B or better, two required courses (6 credits) plus two elective courses (6 credits). The two required courses are as follows:

  • SYST 510 Systems Definition & Cost Modeling 
  • SYST 542 Decision Support Systems Engineering

The two elective courses must be selected from the following:

  • SYST 520 System Engineering Design
  • SYST 619 Introduction to Architecture-Based Integration
  • or
  • ECE 672 Introduction to Architecture-Based Systems Engineering
  • SWE 619 Object-Oriented Software Specification and Construction
  • ECE 542 Computer Network Architecture & Protocols
  • CS 555 Computer Communications and Networking
  • INFS 612 Data Communications & Distributed Processing

    Only one of CS 555, ECE 542 and INFS 612 may be taken.
